Debbie Reynolds Dies One Day After The Death of Her Daughter, Carrie Fisher…

There’s no need to go through the list of credits for either the late actress/comedienne Carrie Fisher nor, for her mother, actress, Debbie Reynolds.  Their list of accomplishments within the entertainment world has and will be documented by many other sources.  What I wish to express is my deepest condolences to their family.

It was tragic to hear that Carrie Fisher had passed away at the age of 60 but, to hear that her mother, Debbie Reynolds, suffered a stroke while making funeral arrangements for her daughter and passed away only hours later and one day after her daughter’s passing, was both ironic as well as horribly sad news in such a rough year where many stars that we came to love and know, have also passed on both young and old.  There will be some hefty In Memoriams done during award ceremonies in early 2017 which may take up a good chunk of these shows.

While I was not truly a Carrie Fisher fan as much as I was a Debbie Reynold’s fan, I felt both of their losses and took them hard.  That’s not to say that I thought any less of the others in the entertainment business who have passed this year but, more because this appeared to be a mother-daughter bond that even death couldn’t break.

In spite of many tortured years between Fisher and Reynolds (Fisher taking blame for that estrangement by saying that she didn’t want to be Debbie Reynold’s daughter due to her famous mother’s stardom) they had found a way to patch up their differences and were finally able to be together, loving one another.

Sadly, Fisher had drug addictions over the years as well as mental health issues that were also part and party to her issues with her mom. Fisher had smoked weed from the age of 13 then, went on to Cocaine, LSD and possibly other drugs. It’s unclear as to how much she did at this time.  Years and even decades of their lives were ruined and wasted because of these issues.  Fisher, herself, admitted it openly in books she had written, stand-up comedy routines as well as interviews, including one done with Oprah Winfrey.

Reynolds had long ago openly stated that it was heart breaking to watch her daughter in such distress and not wanting her as part of Fisher’s life.  As graciously as she could, Reynolds stated that Fisher had pushed her away and there had been nothing she could do except to hurt.  It was sad for both of them as so much time in Life was wasted that could have been spent together.  The depths of mental health issues and drug addictions cannot be measured except in despair for all parties involved it seems.

What was certain was that Reynolds had been with son, Todd Fisher the morning of December 28, 2016, one day after her only daughter’s passing, distraught, overwhelmed and grieving to make funeral arrangements for Fisher when she was stricken with a stroke.  It was allegedly not the first one this year or last that Reynolds had experienced but, it was the one that would end her life only hours later.

Reynolds had stated to Todd that she just wanted to be with Carrie.  And, so it was.  Her passing only hours after her daughter, Carrie’s death, led her to what we all hope was a reunion of the mother-daughter duo.  Perhaps, there was a bond between mother and child that couldn’t be broken?  Whatever it was, son, Todd Fisher stated “she’s with Carrie”.

As family will now have to plan a double funeral for the pair now, it’s uncertain as to how it will take place or when but, suffice it to say that one can only hope that they are together and at peace, loving one another without condition right now.

From my little corner of life, as sad as it all is, I can see reason, justice, hope and a bond that couldn’t be broken by even death itself.  Prayers go out to their family left behind as they grieve both losses at once.  May they take comfort in the idea that perhaps, just perhaps, they are truly together right now.

Just One of Those Blogging Blah Days

I’m sure every blogger has them.  They’re the days when everything in your life seems like someone pulled the plug out of the bathtub of your life and everything is draining out yet…you don’t have a clue on what to write about that won’t scare off any readers, bore them to tears of have them wondering if you belong in a psychiatric ward, doped on heavy medications.

Yup…I’m having one of those days….months, really.

To make matters worse, it seems that out of everything that I’ve written, Tom Cruise and his marriages seem to be the highest read entries, making everything else seem like a total waste of time and breath.  I’m kind of wishing at this moment that my blog was purely about Tom Cruise.  Problem is, I don’t know the guy or anyone who knows him so the scoops, dishes and dirt on him are as much a mystery to me as they are to everyone who Googles “Tom Cruise” in search of everything they can find out about him.

Really, what do we need to know about Cruise that’s all that fascinating?  He’s had 3 marriages, ruined them all because of his Scientology religious affiliations (where they were using him to begin with as he was a big name that brought attention to the practises of the “church”). His first marriage to Mimi Rogers, who by the way, introduced him to Scientology as her father was part of it.  She was raised on its teachings and the marriage ended by the church’s interference.  That’s how he met Wife number 2, Nicole Kidman.  The church saw to it that Cruise’s philandering ways were heading down the path of meeting Kidman and making her, Wife Number Two. That marriage ended when Cruise’s Scientology involvement became too much for her to deal with and, likely…for other reasons as well.  He has children with his second wife, actress, Nicole Kidman that he’s inducted into the Scientology Hall of Fame and, another child with young actress, Katie Holmes, Suri Cruise…who is terribly spoiled for all intents and purposes and not indoctrinated into the church as mom, Katie, wouldn’t hear of it happening.

Did I say that he’s crazy?  Ok, well…he is. …but, I’ll let you be the judge in this video where he goes off into a rant.  If you can tell me what he’s talking about, please translate for me in the comment section.  I don’t speak Alien.  By the way, if you’re interested in a good laugh, this might be a better video to watch.  It’s a spoof of Cruise’s rant and well done.  There’s actually a few of them.

As a sidenote, rumour has it that Cruise has a “new love”.  Emily Thomas is seemingly, a Katie Holmes “look-a-like” and yes, only 22 years old.  Yes, the now, 54 year old actor seems to like them young.  Maybe, he thinks he’s Noah and going to re-populate the church on his own?  Who knows what runs through the man’s head?  Do we really want to know what runs though his head at all?  Worst of all, who knows what runs through any woman’s head who wants to be with him?  Well, besides money and fame, that is.  However, when they try getting out of the church or the church wants them out, they either have a difficult time of it or, their marriage is meddled with, along with their heads, until they’re running for the hills and keeping their mouths shut.  Mum’s the word, it seems.

With that now off of my chest, I digress back to blogging and the effort that it takes to write something coherent and interesting.  I’m in a slump at the moment.  Really, I should stay away from the stats page where I can see the searches that people do and what they are looking for while doing them.

By the way, yes you can eat dessert and lose weight.  I know that’s another popular search many people do.  Type it into the search bar and my piece will come up.  While you’re at it though, would you take a look at some of the other of the pieces that I’ve written?  It might boost my morale for writing a tad again.  Oh yes…and let me know what you think on any of the pieces.  After all, there’s more to this life than Tom Cruise and his marriages.  At least…that’s the way that I see things from my little corner of life.

Dirty Dancing: Did “Baby” and Johnny Stay Together?

There are few movies that I absolutely adore but, if I had to name one, I’d have to say that “Dirty Dancing”, 1987 with Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey has to be my all time favourite.  Having watched the movie several dozen times, I know the lines before they are said and often quote them during opportunistic moments to be comical.

For those of you who know the movie, I’m sure that you have the same question that most of us were left with…

“What happened after that final night at Kellerman’s?  Did Baby and Johnny stay together or did they go their own separate ways?”

While it could have gone either way, I think the majority of us wanted to believe that Baby and Johnny did continue on after that and ended up happily wed with babes on their knees and adoring grandparents by the babies’ sides.

The other way it could have gone could have been that it was simply what it appeared to be…a “summer romance” that ended or faded away shortly after that Labour Day Weekend where Johnny went back to dancing or into the trade of painting and plastering and Baby went to college then, into the Peace Corps, Daddy still loving her.

There’s really 2 reasons why it might have been left open ended like this.

The first and most likely reason is that the writers and producers decided to take artistic license and leave it up to the viewer’s imaginations thus, making it whatever the viewer wanted it to be.  Nice way to please everyone, isn’t it?

The second reason might have more to do with the idea that if they left it open ended, there was room for a potential future sequel where fans of the movie could catch up with Johnny and Baby to find out whether they were together or had drifted apart and were coming back together again.

Either way, there was the possibility that everyone could be pleased.

Frankly, I always held the ending that Johnny and Baby did continue their romance beyond that summer.  That’s just my imagination, of course but then again, this was a fictional piece from someone else’s imagination.

What I didn’t know until about an hour prior to writing this piece was that there was an ending that gave up that answer.  They chose to leave it on the cutting room floor for likely the reasons that I have given above.

To watch this deleted scene with the answer, WATCH HERE.

Ending this here as there will never be a sequel done to Dirty Dancing with Patrick Swayze since he had sadly passed away in Sept. of 2009 with Pancreatic Cancer, I will leave all Dirty Dancing Fans with this famous and probably the best, most beloved and remembered scene in the entire movie, filled with symbolism and romance that still sweeps women’s hearts away….THE FINAL DANCE SCENE TO “DIRTY DANCING”.

Lily White Oscars Boycott?

Chris Rock to host the 88th, 2016 Academy Awards, February 28th

On the heels of the “Black Lives Matter” brigade or bandwagon, comes the protests of certain African American Actors towards the lack of “black actors” nominated for this year’s Academy Awards.  Does one have to do with the other?  Well, let’s not stop there.  There’s allegedly, a Civil Liberties Union who have called for a government investigation into the hiring practises within Hollywood’s film industry, citing that between 2013 and 2014, 82% of movies were directed by white men.  It certainly sounds as though this latest protest towards the Academy Awards may be connected in some way to black “rights” in a lot of areas of life.

During a Martin Luther King Day ceremony, actress Jada Pinkett-Smith and director, Spike Lee, both stated that they were boycotting the awards this year because of the lack of representation of the black population.

Pinkett-Smith said she would not attend because it was the second year in a row, none of the nominations were of black people.  Of course, Pinkett-Smith’s husband, actor, Will Smith was not nominated for an award in the best actor category this year for his role in “Concussion”. Spike Lee’s film, aChicago gang violence hip-hop musical “Chi-Raqand” didn’t make it either.  There were a lot of critics who scorned Lee’s movie.  That leaves the question for these two of whether it could also make it more to do with perhaps, some sour grapes?  It appears that these 2 are the strongest voices in this “protest” against the awards this year.

Spike said he “cannot support” the “lily white” Oscars.

If anyone cares to know the stats on African American/Blacks nominated or having won Academy awards, it’s here.  Forty-four African Americans have been nominated to date.  This will be the 88th year for the awards ceremony so, I guess it will depend upon which vantage point one is taking but, given that African American actors and actresses have only in recent years  been seriously involved in the movie industry, it may or may not be more slanted towards that of a stats point of view?

“African-American actresses and actors are more common on the big screen, but they are still scarce in bigger blockbuster movies, “with the stakes high, many studio executives worry that films that focus on African-American themes risk being too narrow in their appeal to justify the investment. Hollywood has nonetheless shown a willingness in recent years to bank more heavily on African-American actors and themes.” Studio executives explain the lack of presence of the African Americans in supporting or starring roles by stating “only 4 out of 10 movies turn a profit, according to the Association of Motion Picture and Television Producers. But because pictures with nearly all-black casts come along more infrequently, they tend to stand out more when they fail”.  This was according to studio producers.

It’s estimated that 1 Billion (yes, you read that number correctly), viewers will tune into the 2016 Academy Awards with African American Comedian, Chris Rock as host.

“That 1 billion number isn’t going to change a whole lot if black people didn’t watch,” said Naeemah Clark, a TV analyst who teaches entertainment economics and diversity at Elon University in North Carolina. “But it’s not really about the numbers,” she added Tuesday. “How many more years do we have to be reminded that there are segments of our population who are not being represented?”

It’s hard to say exactly what is meant here by Naeemah Clark.  Is she saying that The Academy needs to throw in African American nominations as “token nominations” to soothe racial tensions?

However, let’s take a quick look at how Oscar Nominations are determined to decipher who gets nominated, how and why.

There are some several thousand members of the Academy who all get to vote on different categories for nomination.  The ballots are cast and they are counted.  The ones with the most votes are the ones nominated.  That’s a very simplified version of the process but, suffice it to say that it’s much like a political election.  Those eligible to vote, vote and the candidates with the most votes, wins.  Actors vote on actors, actresses vote on actresses, directors vote on directors and well, you get the gist.  If you’d like to read more in-depth as to the process, which is more complicated than what this interpretation makes it seem, you can read it here.

Given how that works, it appears that it’s the members of The Academy (the actors, actresses, directors, producers etc.) who decide who gets both the nominations as well as the winners in each category.  It’s not the general public.  The average Jane and Joe have NO say in who wins these awards.  So, what is that saying?  Actors and actresses, directors and producers…the entire gamut and spectrum within The Academy are chiefly racists?  That’s pretty much what this type of stance is saying.

But, wait a minute here.  If that’s the case, where are the Black members stances in the voting process?  Does that mean that all members of The Academy who are members of the Black population, will ONLY vote for Black members?  Does it mean that there just aren’t enough Black members of The Academy to vote the Black Hollywood Population into nominations and wins? Exactly what is this all saying?

“The black television audience overall is pretty small, as little as 5 million during the Academy Awards, and has fluctuated in the last 10 years,” a quote from The International Business Times is quoted here as saying.

So, even the Black viewers are not much interested in watching The Academy Awards.  Is it because it’s white dominated?  What about years when star-studded people like Oprah Winfrey, Jennifer Hudson, Denzel Washington and other big name, Black stars have been nominated?  Do they tend to watch more then or, are they simply not interested in The Awards to begin with?  The Black population makes up about 13.2% of the American population and being about 41.7 million people, how is it that only about 5 million of them, tend to watch in spite of members of the Black Community being nominated during other years?  Who has those stats and reasons/motivations or lack of them?

From my little corner of life, if there is a conspiracy going on for an all white awards ceremony, there shouldn’t be.  However, given all of the above, there appears to more of a bandwagon to jump on for perhaps, sour-graped, Black actors and actresses in Hollywood and they are going to use whatever vehicle they can jump upon.  One thing is for sure though, no one should “cave” to political, race or cultural pressure just because that pressure is there.  Examine the facts first.  If there is a justified and bonafide gripe, fix it.  If not, don’t let political correctness or fear of being considered “racist” be the factor on which things are based.  Do what’s right, not what’s pressured by a group of any kind.

And, maybe, it’s time to just drop the Academy Awards totally?  After all, it’s about Hollywood, honouring Hollywood.  It’s not about the average Jane and Joe giving them the nods or the nays nor the glamorous awards ceremony.  This is Hollywood where everything is made up, including the actors and actresses.

Could Doctors And Prescription Antidepressants Been The Cause of Robin Williams’ Suicide

Could pharmaceutical prescriptions, given by doctors have killed Robin Williams?

Note:  The following are my musings only, based upon information put out by media outlets and do not necessarily constitute truth or reality.

Actor-Comedian, Robin Williams' suicide...could it be the result of side effects from his prescribed medications?

Actor-Comedian, Robin Williams’ suicide…could it be the result of side effects from his prescribed medications?

It’s been 3 months since Actor, Robin Williams ended his own life by hanging himself with his own belt in his home.  Not much new has come out about Williams’ death.  It seems to have been a big news story for a couple of weeks then, after the quick and hushed funeral services, with cremation occurring one day after his death, nothing more was said.

Questions lay unanswered and Life moves on for the rest of the world.  New stories have taken over and shortly afterwards, the world quit wondering, it seems.

However, news has surfaced that allegedly, the toxicology report done during Williams’ autopsy, revealed that Williams had 2 antidepressants and 2 caffeine related substances in his body at the time of his death.  No alcohol or illegal drugs.

Allegedly, the report also states that Williams may have been under the influence of a form of dementia at the time that he committed suicide but, Williams had also complained to his wife, Susan about the way his meds made him feel.

What is most questionable is a bottle of Seroquel, a drug used to treat schizophrenia, bi-polar disorder and depression, prescribed a week before his death, were found closed.

TMZ alleges that there were court documents which state that Williams was likely suffering from a form of dementia caused by Parkinson’s Disease, called “Lewy body dementia”.  Initial reports however, stated that Williams was in “early stage Parkinson’s”.

Williams wife at the time of his death, Susan Schneider, has allegedly stated in the Coroner’s Report that Williams was still disturbed over his 2009 move “World’s Greatest Dad” where Williams had played the father of a young man who accidentally ended his own life via the same method that Williams (ironically or not), ended his own.

When asked whether Williams was into auto-erotica (such as that portrayed in the film), Schneider stated that he was not.

The night before Williams died, it has been reported that he appeared to be suffering a form of paranoia where he placed his watches in a sock and gave them to someone (unnamed) “for safe keeping”.  He had also taken out his iPad, something Schneider said he hadn’t done for months.  She saw that as a “hopeful sign”.

According to news sources, several tabs were left open to research on drugs like Lyrica, an anti-seizure medication and Propranolol, more commonly used to treat blood pressure and tremors.  Could it be that Williams was trying to find alternative medications because he felt uncomfortable with the side effects of the medications he was prescribed?

Williams had also reportedly begun taking Levodopa to treat symptoms from the Parkinson’s Disease.

One need only watch the commercials for different prescription drugs to find that depression and suicidal thoughts may appear or become stronger while on a lot of these drugs.  It has become more widely recognized that antidepressants are most commonly the causes of such thinking patterns coming about or worsening.  They have been under scrutiny because of that effect on an already depressed person or to create those types of impulses and thoughts when being used for other purposes. Antidepressants medications are seemingly, being handed out by physicians like candy in today’s medical world to treat everything from Menopausal symptoms to weight issues or even smoking cessation.  Properly used, under the correct conditions, they can be life savers but, seemingly far too many doctors are worrying more about prescribing other medications so, they resort to antidepressant scripts as seeming “cure-all” for everything that ails someone.

Hallucinations is one of the possible side effects of Levodopa, something that has been insinuated as having possibly happened through what has been hypothesized as Williams’ potential Lewy body dementia. Abnormal thinking: holding false beliefs that cannot be changed by fact

Was it truly Parkinson’s Dementia related or was it the medication’s side effects?

While it is unclear whether Williams had taken any of the Seroquel, side effects of Seroquel may include mood or behavior changes, constipation, drowsiness, headache, and trouble sleeping. Older adults with dementia may have a slightly increased risk of death when taking this medication. It also includes a warning that these side effects can occur and your doctor should be contacted if you experience, restlessness/constant need to move, shakiness (tremor), signs of infection (such as fever, persistent sore throat), mental/mood changes (such as increased anxiety, depression, thoughts of suicide).

Sadly, most antidepressants come with this warning:

WARNING: Antidepressant medication and suicide risk

For some people, antidepressant treatment causes an increase, rather than a decrease, in depression—and with it, an increased risk of suicide. While this is particularly true of children and young adults on antidepressant medication, anyone taking antidepressants should be closely watched for suicidal thoughts and behaviors. The suicide risk is greatest during the first one to two months of antidepressant treatment.

Monitoring is especially important if this is the person’s first time on depression medication or if the dose has recently been changed. Signs that medication is making things worse include anxiety, insomnia, hostility, and extreme agitation—particularly if the symptoms appear suddenly or rapidly deteriorate. If you spot the warning signs in yourself or a loved one, contact a doctor or therapist immediately.

If you are concerned that a friend or family member is contemplating suicide, see Suicide Prevention.

Having seen all of this, is it any wonder that the “cure” may be worse than the disease?

It seems plausible that perhaps, Williams’ suicide, given all of the above, may have been more as a result of side effects of medications prescribed by his doctors than his actual depression and Parkinson’s Disease.  At the least, one cannot truly rule it out as a possible cause.

Will we ever truly know?  Likely not but, the potential remains that it could have been doctor prescribed medications that drove Williams to suicide or at least, increased the potential for it.  That is also ringing as a higher possibility since it was alleged that Williams had suffered from depression and anxiety for many years but, hadn’t ever gotten to the point of suicide.  Why then?  Could it have been the medications and their side effects?

Of course, his doctors are all going to report that they feel it was some form of dementia due to his disease as opposed to the medications that he was prescribed by them.  What doctors would openly say, “I think the medication(s) I prescribed may have been detrimental and set suicidal thoughts/dementia/hallucinations which drove him to suicide/was to blame for it”?  None.  No doctor is going to admit that possibility and put himself or herself into that position of being slapped with a lawsuit.

I suspect that there’s a fairly 50/50 chance or better that Williams may have been pushed over the proverbial edge and into suicide by the side effects of the medications he was prescribed.  Do I have proof?  No.  Can I be sure that is the case?  No.

This is all just my musings.  Nothing more.  It is simply a possibility and a vantage point from my little corner of life.
